I received an amaryllis for a gift over the holidays and it turned out to be a late blooming amaryllis. However, it was a beautiful amaryllis, nonetheless! I probably don’t need to tell you, that an amaryllis will usually bloom in December. I had placed it in front of my kitchen window, but it wasn’t really growing, so a few weeks before Easter, I decided to move it instead of giving up on it.
Environment Matters
I thought it might be me; however I learned that the amaryllis prefers light from a specific direction, coming from the south, or west. After I moved it to a new window, with light coming in from a new direction, it had a growth spurt. A couple weeks later, it bloomed. Just in time for spring. Although it bloomed several months later than expected, it created quite the display!
Late Blooms are Beautiful Too
Plant life is so beautiful to me. It’s not only the light that matters, but the right light, and environment for growth that matters. It also reminded me to have patience. I think we are entering a new era that will require increasing patience. I believe the new economy is centered around compassion, well-being, stillness and will require intuition and curiosity to test and figure things out in new ways.
Amaryllis Plants and Pets
*One important note about the amaryllis-if you have pets, the bulbs expecially are poisonous. My two cats weren’t interested in this flower, until after it bloomed of course! I guess he was a late bloomer on discovering it. So, I ended up taking it to the office. One of them kept wanting to attack it, and I decided that after I waited all of that time for it to bloom I wasn’t going to let him play with it. I guess he was a late bloomer on discovering it.
