Book Review-The Growing Season by Sarah Philpott

A Year of Down on the Farm Devotions (Harvest House)

This is the first book review I’ve done in a while. I made a commitment to myself to be more selective about the reviews I agreed to. This is in part because of my schedule, and also so I can focus on my own writing projects. When I received this opportunity along with an advanced copy of the book and this cute Farm Gal t-shirt, it was a book I was excited to feature.

If Sarah’s name sounds familiar to you, it’s possible you’ve read Loved Baby, another title by Sarah. The Growing Season is a gift-style, devotional book, that is sectioned by the seasons of the year.

Seasons

Sarah lives on a 4th generation cattle farm in Tennessee and I can appreciate the theme. I spent several years of my young adulthood further south than Tennessee. You couldn’t tell one season from the next. Growing up in the Midwest, we have four clearly defined seasons, as she outlines in her book of story-styled devotions. Here in Illinois, where I live now, we mark the fall with tailgating, and trips to our favorite apple orchards. My Dad actually grew my pumpkin this year. You learn as you get older, seasons are always changing in your life, too. No one warns you about ths. It takes a little time to adjust, and let go of each passing season, and to welcome in the new. Sarah weaves the transition of seasons on her family farm into what God is doing in her life, on the farm, and in her family.

Devotions

The devotions are a good length for busy, weekday mornings, when you’re short on time. We’re told not to judge by the cover, but the book is designed aesthetically beautiful. You’ll want to sit out on the porch on a weekend morning with your coffee, and linger a bit longer, and enjoy it.

Who couldn’t use a little more time on the farm these days, even if it’s via a book? The cozy, simple wisdom of farm life, paired with God’s truth is a great start, or end your day.
